“Everybody Makes Mistakes”Itistruethatallpeoplemakemistakes,orsin.Thistruthiscapturedinthefamous proverbexpressedbythe18thcenturyEnglishpoet,AlexanderPope,whenhesaid,“Toerris human;toforgive,divine.”TheBibleconfirmsitinPaul’sstatement,“Forallhavesinnedand fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).Ontheotherhand,“everybodymakesmistakes”mightoftenbeexpressedasameansof relievingguiltformistakesmade.Assuch,itisanexcellentillustrationofthefallacyof“moral equivalency,” which treats all sins as if they were equal. They are not.Yes,everybodymakesmistakes,but,first,noteverybodyexacerbatestheirmistakesby continuingthem.Christiansarenotdistinctivebyvirtueofthefactthattheyareperfect,while everybodyelseisimperfect.Instead,theyaredistinguishedbythefactthat,whentheydomake mistakes,orsin,theyrepentofthemandstriveforimprovement.Theydonotcontinueto wallowinthemireofsinandconsolethemselveswiththethoughtthatatleasteverybodyelseis inthemirewiththem.Rather,theygetupandcleanthemselvesoffbythebloodofChristand try to do better the next time.Second,notallsinsareequal.Somehavemoreserious,evenirreparable,consequences and,thus,requireaheartwhichcancontemplatethoseconsequencesbutstillbeindifferentto thehurttheycauseothers.Itwouldberidiculousforthemurderertosay,“AtleastIdon’tlitter.”Victimsoflitteringusuallysurvive;victimsofmurderdonot.JesussaidtoPilate,“…Hewho delivered Me up to you has thegreater sin.” (Jn. 19:11).WhenJacob’ssonsrespondedtotherebukeoftheirfatherforthemurderofthe Shechemitesbysaying,“Shouldhetreatoursisterasaharlot?”theywereattemptingtojustify themselvesbyanappealtomoralequivalency.Shechem’ssexualcrime,asbadasitwas,didnot warrant murdering and pillaging a whole city.Eventhoughallmistakes,orsins,donotrisetothesamelevelofseriousness,allsins requirethesameremedy:thebloodofChrist,whichismadeavailabletothemfortheir cleansing,astheyrepentoftheirsins.So,thesolutiontothesininaperson’slifeisnottoexcuse, ignore,orminimizeitbyimplyingthatheisnoworsethananybodyelse,buttorepentofsinand stop it.
